The Couplants and Cables You Need for High Temperature Ultrasonic Testing
High-Temperature Ultrasonic Testing
Imagine inspecting a live steam pipe at 700°F only to realize your couplant is evaporating, your cable is failing, and safety is at risk. High-temperature ultrasonic testing (over 350℉) demands specialized materials to prevent equipment failure, inaccurate readings, and even hazardous conditions.
Here, we will look at the criteria for ultrasonic testing (UT) in extremely high temperatures, the associated challenges, and explore the products—specifically the couplants and cables—that Echo Ultrasonics offers to address these scenarios.
When to Use High Temperature Ultrasonic Testing
While standard UT couplants and cables are generally rated for up to approximately 125-150℉, they may degrade in high temperature scenarios. For high temperature ultrasonic testing, which is defined as inspections performed above 150℉ and up to approximately 1,000℉, you need the right materials that won’t evaporate, char or produce harmful vapors at the testing temperature.
The Problem with Outdated Operating Range Information
Some high temperature couplants in use today were developed years ago. Formulas, manufacturing and test methods have changed, often resulting in operating ranges that are lower than when these products were originally introduced. Confusingly, many product names have remained the same and have incorrect, obsolete data sheets on distributor websites which can be misleading.
The best way to reduce the risk of auto-ignition during a high temperature ultrasonic inspection is through careful selection of couplants with an operating range that is appropriate for the object being inspected and that is clearly marked on the product and safety data sheet.
